Friendly People
This is a new day for Nicaragua. 5 million souls of diverse indigenous culture, ethnic background and skin color all pray together at the Caribbean, in the diverse dialects originating from the ancient Chorotegas, in Spanish and English. People dedicated to the land, family, tradition and religion that hope to share their love, understanding and friendship and to greet you with a permanent and sincere welcome smile. If there is one visible symbol of Nicaragua, it is the warmth of the people, which is radiated in the breadth of their smiles. People, who live and flourish in a land so endowed by nature and steeped in heritage, mirror the beauty and the culture which surrounds them and show it in their every day life.

Colonial Past
Our Spanish heritage dates back to 1502 when Columbus anchored off Central America. Some years later the first of our great cities was founded. Today the houses, cathedrals and stately buildings built by these founding patriarchs stand retaining most of their colonial splendor. Our heritage is their culture, their language and their religion. The Spanish colonists left an incredible imprint on this country. Granada, Nicaragua, has cobblestone streets that can be explored in a horse drawn carriage. León also has some good examples of colonial architecture. The ruins of La Pólvora, San Pablo and El Castillo are fortresses built by the Spanish to protect the San Juan River area and the city of Granada.

Colors
Nicaragua is a country of spectacular beauty and color. The green of its rain forests, the color of its soaring mountains and volcanoes, its deep azure lake and seas, birds and plants... all bathed in the golden tropical sunlight. These, and a deep mystical belief, are the foundation of the colorful handicrafts and folklore of the area. Ours to preserve and to share.

Natural Wonders
Nicaragua is an area of great environmental and ecological diversity. Building from two beautiful seacoasts, the green land swells in the middle of the isthmus to giant mountain ranges and stately volcanic peaks dotted with spectacular rivers and lakes. Offshore, sun bathed islands are ringed by living coral reefs. All of this, together with its colorful flora and fauna, is our natural heritage. This biodiversity includes some of the most impenetrable jungles in the world, a humid tropical climate in the lowlands and jagged mountains ranging to heights of 12,000 feet. The lower slopes of these ranges rejoice in streams and rivers. Rivers like the San Juan and Coco are excellent for enjoying life with nature.

Ancient Cultures
Ancient men traversed this beautiful country between the two biggest American continents of our hemisphere at least 50,000 years ago. Many settled and left reminders of their stay long before our forefathers even knew the isthmus existed. Over various civilizations flourished in this land. Traces still exist today as reminders of these cultures. Traces of other civilizations exist throughout the region. The fossilized Footprints of Acahualinca in Managua, Nicaragua date back at least 10,000 years. Zapatera Island in Lake Nicaragua, was once an indian burial ground. Relics of ancient Niquirano Indians are found on the Island of Ometepe . This reveals a culture which occupied the area before 800 AD

Adventure
The very act of enjoying the ambiance of Nicaragua is enough, but for the more adventurous there is more than the thrill of visiting colonial cities and ancient temples. There is our unspoiled natural beauty with pristine rivers, exotic jungles to discover, scaling mountain peaks, climbing to the lip of a steaming volcano, diving on one of the most beautiful barrier reefs, exploring vast and ancient caves or fishing in one of the two oceans or lakes. These are some of the exciting adventures that Nicaragua has to offer. Throughout the country, for the freshwater fisherman, the streams have yielded world record catches of guapote and rainbow trout.
